Problems with the use of Benzoyl Peroxide
We can safely guide you.
BPO is a one of the most effective topical acne medications currently available. A chemical from the organic peroxide family and an antiseptic, benzoyl peroxide acts by penetrating into the pore, therein releasing oxygen and killing the Propionibacterium acne (or P. acne) bacteria that is capable of living without oxygen below the skin’s surface. It also causes beneficial peeling deep in the follicle which helps to loosen acne impactions.
BPO worn on the skin each day, for the correct amount of time, will continue to peel deep within the follicle, suppressing bacterial overgrowth which will keep new impactions from forming. Any BPO medication that can be tolerated overnight the first week is not strong enough to control acne in the long run. In turn, any BPO medication strong enough to clear acne, is definitely too strong to be tolerated overnight for the first 2-3 weeks of therapy, which is why many abandon BPO. We prefer to gradually ease clients into stronger BPO use by creating individual adjustment times depending on skin type. We also recommend non-comodogenic moisturizers especially designed for skin affected by acne to help ease dryness associated with benzoyl peroxide therapy.
